Betty Valassi was born in Thessaloniki to parents who were refugees from Asia Minor. Her real name is Despo, but her mother changed it to 'Betty'. She studied theatre under great teachers, such as Hourmouzios, Katina Paxinou, Terzakis and Socrates Karantinos.
