She was a great-granddaughter of General Mariano Vallejo, who commanded the army which surrendered California to General John C. Fremont. Her mother was Natalia Haraszthy, granddaughter of Agoston Haraszthy, founder of California's wine industry. She was educated in San Rafael, California.
